| Procedures to be followed by parents/guardians who wish to review the PSSA |
|
Parents and guardians may review the assessments by making arrangements with the school assessment coordinator, Mrs. Lisa Hartsock, at 742-2274 ext. 4319 once assessments arrive at the school by February 27th. The reviews will take place two weeks prior to the testing windows. Confidentiality agreements must be signed, and no copies of the assessments or notes about assessment items will be permitted to leave the school.
If after reviewing the assessments parents do not want their child to participate in one or all of the assessments due to a conflict with their religious beliefs, they must put this request in writing, addressed to school district superintendent, Dr. Brian Toth, and deliver to Mrs. Hartsock in the high school prior to the beginning of the assessment(s) to request to excuse their child from the assessment.
Exclusion based on Religious beliefs is the ONLY permissible basis to opt out your child from taking the PSSA tests. |

| Sled Riding Safety Tips |
|
Should the weather cooperate and the opportunity arise to sled ride, here are some suggested safety tips:
Before you let the kids hit the hills to go sled riding, check their sleds and other equipment to make sure they are in good shape. Basically, sleds should have workable steering; the boards should be securely in place; and the runners must be straight and free of rust.
-
Never sled ride in the dark and always sled ride in a well light area that is free of trees or other objects. While you may be familiar with the area, everything looks different in the dark and serious injuries could occur.
-
Always wear a helmet, especially for those children under 12 years of age. Head injuries are very serious and while a broken arm or leg can be repaired, many head injuries are permanent and life threatening.
-
Wear gloves, jackets and boots that are insulated and water proof. Each year many children and adult are treated for frostbite while sled riding.
-
Drag your feet to slow down a run away sled. If this does not work, roll off your sled and onto the ground, this is much safer then staying on the sled.
-
Avoid using inner tubes, saucers and disks. These are hard to steer and could cause you to injure yourself or another person.
-
Do not sled ride when it is icy outside. The ice will cause your sled to go very fast and you will not be able to control it.
-
Inspect your sled beforehand and make sure it is in good condition, before hitting the slopes. A faulty sled could cause you to lose control and could injure you or someone else.
-
Never sled ride in an unsafe area, such as near a street, driveway or cliff.
-
Never attach your sled to the bumper of a car or any other moving vehicle. This is extremely dangerous and many people are injured or killed each year doing this. |
